What is balance bike?
Balance bikes are a kind of bike specifically made for children to help them learn the basics of balancing and steering so that when they come to age they can easily ride on normal bikes. The main distinction between a balance bike and a normal bike is that balance bikes have no pedal whatsoever. Balance bikes can be found to be made out of either wood or metal.
To find out the best balance bike we had to look for durability, customization and some other small aspects of each balance bikes.
Here is our best balance bike reviews:
Strider 12 No-Pedal Balance Bike
Invented in the U.S by Ryan McFarland, this bike can be ridden by the smallest of the toddlers. Starting from an 18 months old baby to 5-year-old children can ride this metal frame bike.
This conventional bike has no pedals or training wheels. Strider bikes have the biggest customization range and their website has made it easier to shop new customizations for your child’s bike.
Strider 12 has three types of bike, a classic one, a custom one and a pro one. One of the major advantages of Striders bikes is its’ color base. It has 7 different colors to choose from.
This bike weighs as low as 2.4 kg. Seat height can be changed from 28 cm to 41 cm. Maximum rider weight is 27 kg which is nice but could have been a bit higher.
The bike can be made from 0% to 100% within 5 minutes. According to Strider Inc. the tires are flat free and made of polymer. The pro version is made of Aluminum which made the bike really lightweight.
The seat is padded to make it more comfortable which is a big upgrade from the previous versions. Major drawbacks could be when compared to other balance bikes, this bike is not the best ergonomically designed product in the market.
Unlike FirstBike it has no brakes which can be good for some people and bad news for others. Metal frame looks and feels durable but it also has some drawbacks, it just does not feel as safer as wooden bikes or plastic bikes. Overall, even though Strider bike review does not show the specs to be top of the chart but it is no way to be taken light-handed.
Schwinn Balance Bike
Invented at the dead end of 19thcentury by German-born mechanical engineer who migrated to the U.S. This American bike company dominated the bike market through the 20th century before they announced their bankruptcy in 1992 and became a subsidiary brand of Dorel Industries.
Throughout our balance bike reviews we found that Schwinn Balance Bike is the best budget friendly balance bike. It weighs 10.5 lb. or 4.7 kg which is not the lowest in the market in fact it is a bit on the higher side.
Which means it is not the balance bike for toddlers but made specifically for children aging 3-4 and that is why the seat can be adjusted for 14 inch to 16.5 inch.
The tire of the bike is air pressurized which can run mostly anywhere and grip on slippery grounds. As we have seen in the other bikes their seats can be customized a bit more than Schwinn.
The footrest of the Schwinn is a bit wider for toddlers but is not an issue for preschoolers. Schwinn does not come with any kind of brake like some other bikes in the market.
The steel frames are wider to prevent kids from getting a scratch by bolts. One of the major issue of a metal frame body is it is susceptible to water. The paint of the bike scratches easily.
Overall, if you have some shortage of budget in your pocket this is one of the best budget friendly bikes in the market.
KaZam Classic Balance Bike
A full metallic finish and look will make you feel a bit confused about the bike. The design looks a bit oldish even though they said their design is unique.
The best thing about this metal body bike is the footrest is situated in such a way that doesn’t create any problems for children. The bike has a weight of 11lb, which is on the higher side but as KaZam targets only children aging 4-5 this weight issue might not be the biggest problem. Seat can be adjusted with the help of any tools whatsoever.
Our balance bike reviews showed that children like the position of the footrest so much that they keep their feet on the footrest most of the time. That also struck me as the same experience of scooter.
Oh, another beautiful thing about KaZam is the bolts are covered by a cap for safer riding experience.
What I do not like about KaZam is it misses the whole market of children aging 2-4. The bike is also heavy and the metallic finish of the bike might be susceptible to rust. The tire is air pressurized. There is no steer limiter in the bike whatsoever like FirstBike for safety issue.
Overall, a durable built bike with metallic body and a retro design might have missed some target market but no doubt can be in the mind that it is a good competitor in the market.
Kinderfeets Green Chalkboard Wooden Balance Bike
Balance bike has come for kids as more of an innovative style bike than an original. And the competitors are searching days and nights to make the bike more innovative every day. Kinderfeets Wooden Balance Bike is the newest created invention or inventive bike.
This bike is the most inventive bike of 20th century. This bike is made in such a way that your child can use it as a chalkboard whenever she/ he likes.
This bike is made of wood which makes it lighter than metal bikes and also wooden bikes do look good in the eye. The seat is extremely comfortable. The tires are made of airless rubber. Seat height can be customized from 13 inch to 16 inch which is not bad.
The age range of the bike is 2- 4 years. The wood foot rest pegs of the Kinderfeets are perfectly placed as it does not hamper the riding experience of the children.
Although there are also some problems that my balance bike reviews has shown, the wood frame of the bike is susceptible to bad weather and if exposed to rain the wood will start to damage. There is no steering limiter for safer riding experience or brake that some new bikes have now-a-days.
This bike is one of the most inventive balance bike reviewed so far. But there are some minor changes needed for this bike to make it to the top of the line.
EZEE Glider Kids Balance Bike
EZEE glider is a metal body bike for the youngest children aging from 18 months to 4 years. This bike has some great features.
One of them is the brake. Not many balance bikes in the market has a brake attached to it even though some might think there are no importance of the brake in a balance bike but I think it does not hurt to attach a brake for greater safety.
This brake is specially made keeping a child rider in mind because the brake is extremely soft and will easily grip in a child’s palm. As we have already mentioned the air tire is better all over than foam or plastic tire and they have kept the option of changing your foam tire into an air pressurized tire adding 30 bucks more.
They also have a kickstand which is one of the rare things in a balance bike. The new EZEE Glider is smallest to date among all the other balance bikes as the seat height of the bike can be lowered as low as 11 inch.
This bike also has turning limiter which is undoubtedly an important addition. The footrest is also handy. The footrest of the bike can be rotated to 90 degree for those who does not like the idea of the footrest.
The seat can be adjusted without any tools whatsoever with the help of what they call “quick release seat clamp”. But there are some disadvantages also. The metal body is susceptible to rust if exposed to water. The design does not look all that classy compared to some other bikes.
Overall, this is an excellent bike. The price is average. But what I feel is the value for the price is really great. The riding experience of the mini glider balance bike is so smooth that it will make you feel like gliding in the air.
How to choose your best balance bike?
The most important thing before buying a balance bike is the child’s favor. Because some bike might be really favorite for one kid might not be the favorite one for other. Here are our steps to help you understand which one you should actually buy:
- The first and the foremost thing is to find the bike that has perfect height for your kid or can be adjusted to your kids’ height. Because there are so many bikes in the market that it is hard to match the bike height to your kid’s height.
- The second important thing might be the safety measures. Some bike has steering limiter, some has no sharp edges and some has specific tires for specific environment. So, you have to know which one is the best for your kids and then buy that one.
- There are wooden frame, metal frame, aluminum frame, plastic frame and so on. Wooden frame tends to be lighter than metal or aluminum. Plastics vary in weighs. But wooden frames are susceptible to bad weather, metal are susceptible to water, plastics are fragile. So, pick the one you prefer the most.
- Customization is another important factor. In today’s drastically changing market each bike makers are providing unique customization for their bike. Go to bike makers’ website or to the nearest store to find the bike that has the best customization options.
These are all that we can advise you when you are thinking to buy a bike for your child. Remember, the first thing you should do after buying the bike is to adjust the bike height to your child height. If your children is scared to ride at first do not push her to ride on it. It is recommended not to take them to a muddy or slippery ground with the balance bike.
